Emory University’s Office of Sustainability recently completed a month-long, campus-wide energy reduction competition. The goal was to reduce energy relative to what was consumed in October, 2015.

The campus saved 274,945 kWh. The winner in the residential category was a sorority village, which reduced energy use 29 percent. The administrative, classroom and “other” category winner reduced use by 15 percent and the research/clinical category winner logged a 6 percent reduction.

The story at the university’s website says that by last year energy use had been reduced by 27.2 percent per square foot compared to a 2005 baseline. By 2025, the goal is to reduce energy use per square foot by half and total energy by 25 percent compared to the 2015 baseline.

Gaming and contests – such as those run by New York and Legrand North America – can both reduce energy use and spread word on the importance of paying attention to energy use.
