NY State Sets Student Energy Contest

New York State has launched the “Energy to Lead Competition.” It is aimed at teams of students from the state’s colleges and universities who are being encouraged to develop campus and community clean energy projects, according to the press release.

The competition is part of the Reforming the Energy Vision’s (REV) Campus Challenge. The goal is to get the students’ ideas on how New York can meet its goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent, generate half its electricity from renewables and decrease energy consumption by 23 percent by 2030. There is $3 million in prize money, according to the release. Proposals must be submitted by 5 PM on April 4.

In July, the state announced 83 communities that were to receive about $100,000 each for community microgrid projects. The competition also is part of the REV strategy.
