The White House announced this week that CEOs of 68 Fortune 500 companies have taken the Act on Climate pledge to reduce emissions, according to USA Today. The total number of large companies on board now is 81. The idea is that these big companies will work to bring their supply chains into compliance as well. This would create a dynamic in which a moderate number of large players and far more numerous smaller players are on board.
Some examples of the approaches companies are taking, according to the story: Nike has pledged to use all renewable resources by 2025, Levi Strauss said it would reduce greenhouse gas emissions 25 percent and purchase 20 percent of energy from renewables by 2020 and Procter & Gamble said it will produce all of its fabric care products in North American by wind power, though not date was given.
Another huge company moving to renewables – and, presumably, working formally or informally to takes its supply chain with it – is Walmart. The use of renewables by the company is said to cut its energy costs by hundreds of millions of dollars annually.
