Port of Long BeachAlta Environmental has been awarded a multiyear, $1,010,000 contract to help The Port of Long Beach, the second busiest port in the US, and its tenants comply with the new California Industrial General Storm Water Permit (IGP).

Under the contract, Alta will implement a stormwater monitoring program at 22 sites throughout the port complex. Alta will also provide consulting, design and implementation, and an analysis of its findings.

Businesses and industrial activities at the port are required to comply with the Clean Water Act regulations, including the new IGP, which goes into effect July 1, 2015. The new permit requires industrial facilities to bolster their stormwater pollution prevention programs and monitoring requirements.

The IGP also requires light industrial facilities, previously exempt from the requirement, to implement specific management measures.

Alta says its studies, design and analysis will ensure the port is in compliance with the new regulations.

Alta is also helping Los Angeles World Airports, which manages Los Angeles International Airport, Van Nuys Airport and Ontario International Airport, comply with the IGP under a three-year, $5 million contract awarded last October.
