ZBB's Flow Battery Provides Energy Storage for Commercial Uses

ZBB flow battery Energy ManageZBB Energy has introduced its zinc bromide flow battery designed for energy storage applications in the commercial and industrial building market. The Agile Flow Battery enables a large amount of energy to be deployed from a relatively small footprint within a building.

Much of the energy storage deployed to date in the commercial and industrial (C&I) building market is limited to short-duration power applications, such as PV ramp support, or UPS for data back-up. Implementing energy storage into the distributed generation system can help building owners reduce electricity expense and generate income. The Agile Flow Battery allows buildings owners to store up to eight hours of energy during low rate time periods and use it during high rate time periods, perform peak shaving, store underutilized PV energy for later use, participate in demand response programs with “smart export” of electricity to the utility, and access back-up power for elevators or other emergency load requirements in the event of a grid outage.

When the Agile Flow Battery is used with ZBB’s Auto-Sync DC-Bus modular control platform, building owners get a scalable solution that can be customized for any application.

The Agile Flow Battery is available for configurations of up to 1 MWh, with shipments beginning in the second half of 2015.

According to a report from Lux Research, redox flow batteries will carve out a 360 MWh market in 2020 worth $190 million.
