Wisconsin Public Power Inc. announced it will reach the state's renewable energy goal -- for 10 percent renewable energy use by 2015 -- six years ahead of schedule, Wisconsin State Journal reports.
The company also announced that it is doubling the size of its Sun Prairie headquarters to nearly 50,000 square feet and will be outfitting the offices for energy efficiency. The headquarters are fueled 100 percent by renewable energy.
In 2005, WPPI aimed to reduce energy use by 10 percent within two years. But it reached a 15 percent reduction in 18 months by retooling its heating and cooling systems, adding dimmer switches and unplugging some of its fluorescent lights. Now the company is working on a 20 percent energy cut by the end of 2009.
WPPI currently provides electricity for 50 municipally operated utilities and nearly 200,000 homes and businesses.
