The world’s largest succinic acid plant, which produces renewable chemicals from sugar instead of petroleum, opened yesterday in Canada.
Renewable chemistry company BioAmber jointly built the $141.5 million Sarnia plant with Mitsui & Co.
The new plant will produce biobased succinic acid from glucose sourced from southern Ontario agricultural suppliers. It has the capacity to product 30,000 tons/year of succinic acid. Applications include: plastics, paints, textiles and coatings, artificial leather, food and flavors and personal care products.
BioAmber Sarnia is part of the growing bio-industrial cluster in Sarnia Lambton and has received support from the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario through the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development, Employment and Infrastructure’s Strategic Jobs and Investment Fund.
