The City of Sacramento aims to improve its fleet’s fuel efficiency, increase MPG and reduce CO2 emissions by adding XL fleet electrification technology to its six existing Ford F-250 trucks and one Ford Transit passenger van, turning them into hybrid electric vehicles.
The city expects a 25% increase in MPG from its XL hybrid electric trucks, compared to its standard gasoline-powered fleet vehicles. By upfitting the trucks, the city will save money on fuel costs and achieve its sustainability goals.
Sacramento’s Department of Youth, Parks, and Community Enrichment logs significant mileage traveling to and from its more than 200 parks across the city. Fleet manager Mark Stevens says they did an analysis on which truck would be most beneficial in terms of the fuel usage and decided upon its Ford F-250s to unfit with XL’s technology.
XL offers vehicle electrification solutions for commercial and municipal fleets across the country. In addition to the City of Sacramento, XL’s customers include Coca-Cola, Verizon, Yale University, the Cities of Boston and Seattle. With its fleet-ready XLH hybrid electric drive system and the XLP plug-in hybrid electric drive system, Class 2 to 6 commercial and municipal customers can increase fuel economy by 25% to 50% and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 20% to 33%, “decreasing operating costs and helping meet sustainability goals with zero impact on fleet operations,” the company claims.
In August, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) gave approval for XL to sell its hybrid electric Ford F-250 pickup trucks in the state. Now, the County of Los Angeles’ Internal Services Department is measuring and analyzing speed, idling, vehicle drive cycle, CO2 emissions reductions, and MPG of its fleet via an XL Link telematics program.
“The California Air Resources Board and other organizations continue to pursue the statewide goals for reducing greenhouse gases to 40% below 1990 levels by 2030, and part of the burden will rest on the transportation sector to reduce emissions,” XL said at the time. “Many commercial and public fleets are deploying electrified fleet vehicles to meet these goals.”
