In 2010, Walmart installed 12 small wind turbines on parking lot lights in its Worcester, Massachusetts, supercenter. The retailer has now removed the turbines and plans to evaluate what it learned there and at two other US sites, according to an article in Telegram.com.
The turbines were financed and installed by a Deerpath Energy, which was sold in 2010 to Southwest Windpower, which was subsequently bought in 2013 by Oregon turbine maker XZERES.
For Walmart, wind power is the dominant renewable energy it uses in Mexico, according to Telegram.com, but solar power has become the dominant renewable energy the company uses in the United States. In November 2014, Walmart said it had hired SolarCity for the installation of new solar projects at facilities in up to 36 states over the next four years.
