Weis Markets’ Flagship 100 LED-Lighted

LEDThe flagship Weis Markets store in Kelly Lewisburg, PA, is the first in the chain to use LED as its sole source of lighting, according to WNEP. The store also has installed sensors on some of the lights that turn them on and off as necessary, a further cost savings and reduction in energy use.

Weis' executives said that the LEDs are saving 66 percent in energy. There is a second savings: The lights create less heat, which enables food to stay fresh longer. The company says that the lighting has reduced carbon emissions by 594 tons, which is the equivalent to removing 115 cars from the road. Weis will install LEDs in its other stores as they are renovated or built.

In May, Weis expanded its deployment of EnerNOC’s energy intelligence software. The company anticipates costs and track them against budgets. The platform is being used by Weis’ 163 supermarkets in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and West Virginia, according to EnerNOC.
