Wegmans Food Markets says it expects to halve its lighting energy use by year's end by replacing lights at several of its Rochester-area facilities.
The company plans to spend about $1.5 million to replace older light fixtures with more efficient ones and expects to recoup its investment in the form of lower energy costs in about three years.
The company plans to replace 57,000 lighting fixtures with high-efficiency fluorescent fixtures. The project is expected to save enough energy to power more than 800 homes for a year.
In September, the company announced that it was increasing the availability of sustainable packaging and sustainable containers in its fresh food areas.
Earlier this year, the company adopted new standards for buying farmed shrimp.
