A water treatment system by Cambrian Innovation will allow a California brewery to convert spent brewing water into reusable water.
Chris Jackson, founder and CEO of Seismic Brewing Company in Santa Rosa, says he wanted his new brewery in the drought-stricken state to be water efficient. He says he wanted a water:beer ratio of 2:1 and Cambrian had an on-site, one-container water treatment and reuse system ready to order.
Cambrian’s EcoVolt Mini, designed for small and midsize food and beverage producers, will allow Seismic to reuse water by removing 99.9 percent of contaminants and solids from the brewing wastewater. Seismic will use the recycled water for its industrial processes in the brewery.
In addition to requiring less freshwater use, and cutting down on the brewery’s water bills, the EcoVolt system is automated, which reduces operating expenses.
At full capacity, the system will produce over 10,000 therms of clean heat per year, eliminating more than 53 metric tons of CO2 per year.
Lagunitas Brewing Company reduced its water footprint by 40 percent last year after installing Cambrian’s EcoVolt Membrane Bioreactor, a similar on-site water treatment and reuse system.
Cambrian says a winery or brewery can save from $100,000 to more than $1 million a year using an EcoVolt system, compared to using traditional aeration technologies.
