Washington, D.C., will increase its solar energy capacity by about 70 percent by installing solar panels on roofs and parking lots of 34 facilities and parking lots, according to The Washington Post.
The story says that the D.C. Department of General Services entered a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Nextility, which is based in D.C. The story says that estimated savings for the 20-year term of the agreement will be about $25 million.
The solar agreement follows a deal in August with Spanish company Iberdrola Renewables for 125,000 MW annually from a wind farm in Pennsylvania. That arrangement is expected to save the city about $45 million over 20 years.
Not all the renewable energy activity in Washington is being sponsored by the government. In October, The Atlas Brew Works, a two-year-old brewery in the district, said that it soon will be operator completely by solar energy. The news originally was report in The Washingtonian.
