The Atlas Brew Works, a two-year-old brewery in Washington, D.C., soon will completely rely on solar energy, according to Washingtonian.
The brewery is transitioning its power sourcing to 270 solar panels, which were installed on its roof earlier this month. The move to year-round, 100 percent solar will not be immediate, the story says.
Brewing, the story says, is very energy-intensive, and the new approach may trim Atlas' bill by 30 percent. Solar Solution, which installed and will manage the solar initiative, said that the panels comprise a 67.5-kilowatt grid that will generate about 80 MW per year. The panels cover half the roof. A distillery that also occupies the building will remain on the traditional grid.
The energy requirements of brewing lead companies to seek alternative and less expensive sources. Last month, the Maine Beer Company was honored by the Main Conservation Alliance. In June, the company installed two solar panels on its property are generating half of its energy, according to The Forecaster.
