balqonA new lithium-ion battery powered heavy duty electric vehicle may be an option for companies aiming to reduce emissions at warehouses, ports, railyards and industrial plants.

The Nautilus XE20 electric yard tractor can tow loads of up to 40 tons at a top speed of 25 miles per hour, according to a press release. It is manufactured by Balqon.

The vehicle is currently being evaluated by the Port of Los Angeles, reports the Santa Monica Daily Press.

The port also recently signed a deal to purchase hydrogen fuel cell yard rigs from Vision Industries. Those trucks cost about $255,000 apiece and can go about 200 miles over an eight hour shift.

The Nautilus is rated for Class 7 and 8 applications, while Vision Industries' vehicle is rated for Class 8 operations.
