Wal-Mart announced plans to expand its Sustainable Packaging Scorecard in Mexico, reports GreenerPackage.com.
Wal-Mart will provide Mexican packagers and the packaging supply chain that supports its suppliers with details about the scorecard's objective, scope, and timeline at the upcoming Wal-Mart Sustainable Packaging Conference at Expo Pack Mexico on June 25, according to GreenerPackage.com. The giant retailer intends to launch the scorecard in Mexico toward the end of 2009. This follows Wal-Mart Canada's announcement in May that it was launching its Packaging Scorecard, reports GreenerPackage.com.
In November, Wal-Mart announced plans to roll out its Packaging Scorecard at most of its international locations in 2010. Wal-Mart launched the program in February 2007.
Wal-Mart is also helping area residents in Great Falls, Montana, to recycle plastic containers, reports the Great Falls Tribune. Great Falls has not had a city recycling program for plastic containers for three months, so the area Wal-Mart has set up bins in the parking lot, and it will bear much of the costs of maintaining the community program.
Lance Lerud, manager of the Great Falls Wal-Mart store, told the Great Falls Tribune that he did not know if this is the country's first Wal-Mart to take on the job of community plastics recycling.
