A dyeing process designed by fabric supplier Wah Fung Group can achieve 13 percent carbon savings and over 50 percent water savings in fabric manufacturing when compared to certain conventional processes.
According to a Wah Fung report, the company’s Cold Pad Batch dyeing technology achieved the savings when compared to conventional processes using exhaust dyeing.
The analysis uses the new Greenhouse Gas Protocol Product Standard released by the World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, according to the Chinese company.
China is currently aiming to reduce carbon emissions per unit of GDP by 17 percent by 2015, and water use per unit of industrial output by 30 percent and Wah Fung believes the technology could make a significant contribution to this aim.
Data released by The World Bank this year shows that China's population of 1.3 billion produces 5 metric tons of CO2 emissions per capita. U.S. citizens, of which there are 307 million, produce an average of 19.3 metric tons each, the figures show.
However, the rate of growth of CO2 emissions is far higher in China than the U.S., the figures show. From 1990 to 2007 U.S. emissions grew 20 percent, Chinese emissions grew 165.7 percent.
