A ballot measure to repeal California’s plastic bag ban has qualified for the ballot.This also means the law — that bans plastic retail bags and allows grocers to charge and keep 10 cents for each recycled paper, reusable plastic or compostable bags provided to their customers — is suspended until California voters cast their ballots on the issue in November 2016.
In October 2014, Gov. Jerry Brown signed the statewide law, the first in the US, that went into effect Jan. 1.
The American Plastic Bag Alliance, an industry group opposed to the ban, immediately began collecting signatures to overturn the law. The signature deadline was Jan. 1.
