Viridi Energy, a renewable natural gas platform backed by Warburg Pincus and Green Rock Energy Partners, announced the start of construction on a landfill gas-to-RNG facility at the City of Lincoln's Bluff Road Landfill in Nebraska, according to a company press release. The project follows a City of Lincoln request for proposals seeking a partner to finance, design, build, own, operate, and maintain the facility and to market the resulting renewable natural gas, placing the capital risk and commodity marketing responsibility with Viridi rather than the municipality.

The facility is designed to process approximately 3,000 standard cubic feet per minute of landfill gas and is expected to be operational by the first quarter of 2027, upgrading methane into pipeline-quality RNG for injection into Black Hills Energy's natural gas distribution system. Once running, Viridi says the facility will generate renewable energy equivalent to the annual heating needs of approximately 12,000 homes. The project is Viridi's fourth landfill-to-RNG facility and will commission alongside a fifth, in Texas, bringing the company's total processing capacity to 2.3 million MMBtu, according to the release.

Black Hills Energy, which will interconnect the facility to its distribution system, said the project is its second RNG partnership with the City of Lincoln and supports its stated goal of net-zero emissions for its natural gas distribution system by 2035.
