Vancouver, Canada, is building a district energy plant and will require that new buildings in most areas of the downtown peninsula be connected to it, reports the Vancouver Sun.
Creative Energy Canada Platforms has won the contract to build the new district energy plant on a large piece of city-owned land. The new plant will likely be fueled by some type of biofuel: wood refuse is abundantly available in the area.
Currently, about 210 buildings in downtown Vancouver receive steam heat from Central Heat Distribution, which is owned by the same developer that owns Creative Energy Canada Platforms. For phase one of the new district energy system, Central Heat Distribution will convert its existing six natural gas boilers to biofuel.
New buildings will be required to connect to the district energy system in order to ensure the system is financially viable.
