Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, has invested between $30,000 and $50,000 in the EnviroPure disposal system, which turns food waste into water, Ohio.com reports.
According to the EnviroPure website, the system works by through a combination of continuous mechanical processing of the food waste, tightly controlled environmental conditions to maintain aerobic decomposition and hyper-acceleration of the decomposition process through the addition of BioMix additive.
The company says 10 gallons of water is generated for every 100 pounds of food the system digests.
While the university does not have an estimate on how much money it will save with the system, it costs less than $30 per month to power.
