Unity College Gets Grant for Greenhouses

unity_collegeUnity College in Maine, which describes itself as "America's Environmental College," has received a $40,000 grant to upgrade the heating system of McKay Farm & Research Station’s greenhouses, according to the Lancaster Farmer.

The school, which is in Unity, ME, aims to upgrade the campus to carbon-neutral and fossil fuel-free status. The grant, which is seen by the school as a good step toward reaching that goal, is from The Sandy River Charitable Foundation. It will pay for site preparation and purchase and installation of either wood pellet or propane heaters.

The story says that the grant will help heat the greenhouse for farmers being trained, expend food production capability and extend the growing season of the facility.

Farms have very different energy needs than industrial or commercial facilities. The way these businesses approach energy efficiency therefore is different as well.
