Times Online announces its list of the 50 best green companies in the UK, which includes companies that are improving their environmental performance in a joint effort by management and its workforce.
The results are based on two surveys. One covering companies' environmental management policies, training, internal consultation, energy consumption, waste production and recycling. This accounts for 70 percent of the final ranking. The other survey puts explores workers attitudes to green issues in the workplace, which accounts for 30 percent of final rankings.
J C Atkinsons took the top place in the overall rankings, but also for best green company in the small company with high or medium environmental impact category.
Runner-up Carillion, has reduced its Wolverhampton head office's energy consumption by 12 percent last year, and is aiming to cut carbon emissions to 50 percent of 2006 levels within two years.
Third-place winner Co-operative Financial Services scored highest in the employee survey for having an ethical investment policy for its pension fund.
