Transport & Logistics Sector Finds IIoT a Key to Improving Sustainability

Posted

Organizations in the transport and logistics sector are faced with the challenge of reducing their impact on the environment and hearing to stricter government regulations while at the same time needing to transport increasing quantities of goods and people.  increasingly adopting industrial Internet of Things technology to improve the environmental sustainability of their operations, new research from mobile satellite communications company Inmarsat shows.

The research finds that nearly two-thirds of transport organizations are pursuing industrial IoT  (IIoT) to improve their environmental footprint. The biggest drivers of the adoption of IIoT are monitoring environmental conditions like emissions and air quality and improving resource efficiency, at 61% and 54% respectively.

Additionally, organizations in the transport and logistics sector that are using IIoT are reaching their sustainability objectives: the research found that 75% of respondents with fully deployed or trial-stage IIoT solutions are achieving improvements in their sustainability efforts.

The efforts that are showing the most success in achieving sustainability objectives include smart asset tracking, real-time route planning, environmental and fuel efficiency monitoring and telemetry.

While IIoT implementations involve an initial cost, and while the array of solutions can be overwhelming to industrial managers at this relatively early market stage, the investment of time and money is leading to real cost benefits, a 2017 report from Navigant Research found. The drivers for IIoT are compelling, and the market is expected to experience massive growth between now and 2027, Navigant says.
