Toyota has launched its Mirai fuel cell sedan — the first mass market fuel-cell car — at a production ceremony on Tuesday at its Motomachi Plant in Toyota City, Japan.
The automaker plans to produce 700 units of the emissions-free vehicle by the end of December, Industry Week reports. Toyota also plans to expand production of the Mirai — which means “future” in Japanese — to 2,000 units in 2016 and 3,000 units in 2017.
The hydrogen-powered car can travel about 400 miles without refueling.
Earlier this year Toyota made available thousands of hydrogen fuel cell patents royalty free. Announced at the 2015 International CES, Toyota says this initiative aims to spur development and introduction of innovative fuel cell technologies around the world.
