The Most and Least Energy Efficient States

New York, Vermont and Utah landed the top three spots for 2017’s most energy efficient states, while Alabama, Louisiana and South Carolina were voted the least energy efficient.

Wallethub.com, a personal finance website, announced the rankings today in

According to the site, their analysts compared 48 states across two key dimensions, “Home Energy Efficiency” and “Auto Energy Efficiency.” They obtained the former by calculating the ratio of total residential energy consumption to annual degree days. For the latter, they divided the annual vehicle miles driven by gallons of gasoline consumed to determine vehicle-fuel efficiency and measured annual vehicle miles driven per capita to determine transportation efficiency.

Each dimension was weighted proportionally to reflect national consumption patterns and graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing optimal energy efficiency.

Finally, they calculated the total score for each state and used the resulting scores to rank-order their sample. Due to data limitations, they were unable to include Alaska and Hawaii in the analysis.

The top 10 most energy efficient states are:

  1. New York
  2. Vermont
  3. Utah
  4. Minnesota
  5. Massachusetts
  6. Rhode Island
  7. California
  8. Wisconsin
  9. Colorado
  10. Connecticut
