Since its inception in 2009, Tata Consultancy Services’ flagship STEM education program, Go Innovate Together (goIT), has reached over 300,000 students across 48 countries, empowering youth with critical digital skills to thrive in the global digital economy.
goIT was conceived to address a critical skills gap in science and technology fields while inspiring youth to pursue careers in STEM. Launched initially as a summer camp in Cincinnati, Ohio, the program has since evolved into a global initiative offering innovative learning opportunities in mobile app design, the Internet of Things (IoT), and AI. The program’s unique focus integrates technology training with real-world problem-solving, encouraging students to design solutions that align with the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“TCS celebrates the power of student changemakers who are transforming their communities by leveraging 21st-century skills and digital technologies,” said Balaji Ganapathy, Chief Corporate Social Responsibility Officer at TCS. “Over 50% of goIT participants are girls, and 70% are minority students, bridging global equity gaps. These young innovators inspire hope as they tackle challenges using cutting-edge tools like app design, AI, and IoT.”
Over the past 15 years, goIT has built a comprehensive curriculum supported by more than 74,000 volunteer hours from TCS employees. The program offers multiple formats to cater to diverse learning needs:
Each initiative emphasizes innovation and sustainability, guiding students to develop tech-for-good solutions addressing global issues such as poverty, climate change, and health equity.
Peter Singh, Executive Officer of IT Services and Chief Technology Officer at Toronto District School Board, praised the program’s influence: “We’ve been partnering with goIT since 2014, building a robust system for curriculum delivery. Our students love goIT, and the program’s emphasis on digital literacy and problem-solving is a constant reminder of why I chose a career in education.”
The success of goIT is part of TCS’ larger portfolio of corporate social responsibility initiatives, which have impacted 7.1 million people globally. Programs like Ignite My Future, BridgeIT, Literacy as a Service, and Youth Employment Program focus on K-12 education, digital inclusion, sustainability, and employment through skilling.
As part of its 15th-anniversary celebration, TCS has introduced cutting-edge skilling opportunities in AI, Gen AI, and machine learning. These initiatives aim to empower youth from marginalized communities with skills essential for participating in the global digital economy.
The evolution of STEM education over the past 15 years underscores remarkable progress and persistent challenges. While programs like goIT have played a pivotal role in inspiring over 300,000 students and addressing the global skills gap, broader trends reveal opportunities for further growth.
Enrollment in STEM fields has surged by 15%, yet underrepresentation of women and minority groups persists, with only 26% of STEM bachelor’s degrees awarded to underrepresented racial and ethnic groups. Innovations such as augmented reality and maker education have enhanced engagement, but U.S. students continue to lag in global assessments, ranking below the OECD average in key STEM competencies.
Initiatives like goIT demonstrate how industry and education can collaborate to empower youth, build digital resilience, and foster a more inclusive and innovative future. As STEM education continues evolving, TCS’s commitment to bridging these gaps offers a compelling blueprint for global progress.
