The Tasty Baking Company, makers of Tastykakes, announced it has moved production of its remaining Tastykake production lines to its new LEED-registered bakery at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, the largest LEED-registered bakery in the world, according to a company press release.
The new green building will house all seven of the company’s product production lines as well as its corporate headquarters, while the company will close its 88-year-old, six-story Hunting Park bakery,
The new LEED-registered bakery features automated baking equipment and a “straight line flow" from production to packaging to warehouse designed to increase efficiency. The facility also features environmentally-friendly components such as water conservation, the use of recycled building materials, day-light harvesting and energy-efficient HVAC systems. The facility is currently awaiting LEED-certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
President and CEO Charles P. Pizzi said that, now that the company has fully transitioned to its new facility, it can now turn its attention to increasing operational efficiencies even more, a process he expects to last through September.
Like many production facilities, bakeries can reduce energy bills and greenhouse gases by implementing energy-saving measures throughout their manufacturing processes ranging from lighting and electrical upgrades to ensuring that motors are properly cabled and ventilated. Another Philadelphia baker, Kaplan’s New Model Bakery, recently received federal funding to install an energy efficient oven, while Kraft was able to reduce water use at a Georgia bakery by 33 percent by reducing the amount of water used for cleaning specific equipment, eliminating unnecessary re-cleaning of equipment, repairing leaks and changing cleaning procedures.
