Target Joins Sustainable Coffee Challenge, Sets Social and Environmental Goals

Target recently announced its involvement in the Sustainable Coffee Challenge, a collective that aims to stimulate greater demand for sustainable coffee. With this, Target has made a commitment to earn certification for 100% of its Archer Farms coffee in both bags and pods by 2022. To achieve it, the company will work with suppliers that meet a set of social and environmental standards, which, according to Target, means more coffee farmers get better prices.

Coffee sustainability has become a hot topic for food, beverage and retail companies around the world. Just this week, Nespresso issued an invitation to other portioned coffee manufacturers to join its recycling program, paving the way for a global recycling scheme for aluminum coffee capsules. The move was endorsed by the Nespresso Sustainability Advisory Board (NSAB) during its annual meeting in Geneva.

Also, in May 2018, Starbucks and Nestlé announced a global alliance where the Swiss food and beverage company will pay $7.15 billion to market, sell, and distribute Starbucks products. The companies said the deal is aimed at making coffee the world’s first truly sustainable agricultural product.

Under the terms of the agreement, Nestlé will obtain the rights to market, sell and distribute Starbucks, Seattle’s Best Coffee, Starbucks Reserve, Teavana, Starbucks VIA and Torrefazione Italia packaged coffee and tea in all global at-home and away-from-home channels.
