Target has agreed to stop selling its Valentine's Day Message Bears after concerns were raised about high levels of lead.
The Center for Environmental Health tested a neon pink stuff bear sold by Target and found lead levels eight times higher than federal limits for products geared to children 12 and under, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
The California Attorney General and the Center for Environmental Health raised vigorous protests, resulting in Target's decision to pull the bears.
A Target spokesperson told the AP that the bears "had compliant testing results" when they were shipped from China.
“We applaud the Attorney General for sending Target a Valentine’s Day message the company won’t forget,” said Caroline Cox, Research Director for CEH, in a press release.
