L’Oreal has created a strategic function to integrate the company’s sustainability practices, and has appointed 18-year company veteran Pamela Gill Alabaster to lead the function.
Alabaster will develop environmental goals and performance measurements and oversee sustainability-related skills training for employees. At the same time, she will continue to lead on government relations and will contribute to external communications activities, reporting to Rebecca Caruso, executive vice president of corporate communications and external affairs.
“L’Oréal has an ambition to excel in all areas of sustainability and be recognized among the most exemplary corporations of the 21st century,” L'Oréal USA president and CEO Frédéric Rozé said. “Pam’s prior leadership in brand marketing, corporate communications and public affairs provide her with the necessary experience and qualifications to lead our business operations in this newly created function.”
In other moves news, Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary Shaw Industries has appointed Paul Murray as its vice president of sustainability and environmental affairs.
Murray joins Shaw, a $4 billion carpet and floor covering company, after 20 years with furnishings company Herman Miller – most recently as the environmental, health and safety (EHS) and sustainable business practices leader. In 2006, Murray was recognized in a Vanity Fair “Green” issue entitled, “The Re-Inventors: Green Architects and Designers”.
He serves on the board of directors for the University of Michigan's Corporate Environmental Program and Penn State's School of Business Advisory Board, in addition to board memberships for several non-profit environmental organizations. In 2002 he co-founded the Sustainable Research Group (SRG), an environmental consulting service that helps companies implement green initiatives.
Finally, Safety-Kleen, an oil recycling, re-refining and parts cleaning company with 4,200 employees, has appointed Virgil “Chip” Duffie as senior vice president and chief compliance officer, responsible for overall corporate compliance and EHS programs.
Duffie has been interim head of EHS and lead environmental and regulatory council. He joined Safety-Kleen in 1997 as environmental counsel.
In his position, Duffie will report directly to the CEO and the board. The company’s EHS, corporate safety, corporate compliance and internal audit functions will all report directly to Duffie.
