SunPower has achieved a record for its X-Series solar panel technology, the company said.
The panels were validated by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DoE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) as achieving 24.1 percent efficiency, SunPower said. It has reached 22.8 percent efficiency earlier in the year.
The module tested was made using laboratory solar cells of 25 percent mean efficiency, the press release said. The tested product were not off-the-shelf, but were based on commercially available products. The press release offers technical details of the testing. The amount of energy produced in a given amount of space has grown by as much as 70 percent during the past 25 years, the company says.
Last year, Singapore’s Public Utilities Board (PUB) began a nine-month study to test the feasibility of floating solar panels in bodies of water.
