schoolThe Sulphur Springs (CA) School District is set to begin installation of solar panels at nine elementary schools, according to SignalSVC. The installations are part of a 25-year agreement reached between the district and PFMG Solar last July.

The electricity generated by the panels, which will be installed atop carports, shade structures and on lawns and playgrounds, will be sold to the school district at a reduced cost. The savings on the district’s power bill could be as high as 70 percent, the story says. That would lead to savings of between $6 million and $7.4 million during the life of the contract.

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory recently released a study that estimates that 1.118 gigawatts of electricity – almost 40 percent of the amount needed in the United States – could be produced by solar photovoltaics.
