Stony Brook Medical Center Pledges to Reduce Environmental Impact

stonybrook2Stony Brook University Medical Center is the first hospital in the U.S. to sign a comprehensive agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency,  pledging to reduce its environmental impact.

Among the commitments, the hospital says it will reduce its overall energy consumption by 10 percent, recycle 180 tons of cardboard and 5 tons of bottles and cans annually, design all new construction to LEED guidelines, install WaterSense products in new and renovated construction, and eliminate the use of mercury and plastics containing PVC/DEHP.

Stony Brook University Medical Center will track results from these efforts and submit reports to the EPA biannually.
