Stash Tea has removed the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) logo from its products following allegations the certification program is controlled by the logging industry, Sustainable Business Oregon reports.
Stash joins 24 other companies that have shunned the ecolabel including AT&T, Comcast, Office Depot and Southwest Airlines, according to Forest Ethics. The nonprofit accuses SFI of greenwashing and says it certifies “irresponsible logging practices” such as clearcutting and “poisoning of communities with toxic chemicals.”
Many of these companies also have made commitments to shift over to products certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.
For example, Shutterfly gives preference to FSC-certified products in all of its new paper purchases, and Pitney Bowes gives preference to FSC in all new paper purchases for internal use.
