Standard Solar signed an agreement with Freepoint Solar LLC to acquire 27 megawatts of distributed generation solar projects in New York and Rhode Island. Rockville, Maryland-based Standard Solar expects to start construction on the five projects this year.

“These projects are part of the growing DG revolution in the United States, where solar projects interconnect into smaller voltage lines and feed directly into the local electrical system,” said Harry Benson, director of business development for Standard Solar.

Three of the distributed generation projects in Rhode Island, which total around 13 MW, are part of the state’s Renewable Energy Growth (REG) Program supporting the development of 560 MW of renewable energy projects from 2015 to 2020, according to Standard Solar.

The two projects in New York State, totaling 14 MW, are community solar projects. NYSERDA’s NY-Sun Program — a major component of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) — aims to make solar more accessible .

Standard Solar notes that community solar projects offer renewable energy that can offset businesses’ electric bills without requiring them to install photovoltaics on their buildings.

“The five ground-mount projects will generate revenue through taxes and local economic development for the states and local governments, and produce nearly 115 gigawatt-hours of electricity,” Standard Solar said. That’s the equivalent of removing 26,694 metric tons of CO2 from the atmosphere annually, the company added.

Énergir, a Quebec-based energy provider formerly known as Gaz Métro that now has $5.8 billion in assets, purchased Standard Solar in 2017. Currently the subsidiary has more than 100 MW of solar power installed. They plan to engineer, build, finance, own, and operate the five new projects in Rhode Island and New York, with construction starting in the next six to nine months.
