Stackable, Recyclable Bins Reduce Food Waste, Keep Produce Fresh

Growers, processors and shippers of produce have a new sustainable shipping option from Macro Plastics, a California-based manufacturer of returnable and reusable plastic containers. The company has announced the launch of their new hybrid bins - Hybrid 1012 and 1212. The durable, injection-molded bins can be used for a variety of applications, including for harvest, storage, food processing, or shipping. They are 100% recyclable and are designed to be returned and reused, the company says.

They also reduce food waste by better preserving the produce. The bins are tapered, which prevents them from crashing against the walls of any adjacent bins, creating what the company calls a “bruise buffer zone.” The new column design works to protect the containers by absorbing and recoiling impact rather than resisting the blow and breaking.

When stacked with their columns and feet locked into place, the bins sit on top of each other rather than nesting, so that contents remain unharmed. Additionally, the bins have 10% more ventilation for increased airflow and faster cooling.

A key feature of the new bins is the ability to take them apart for return shipments. The columns and feet are modular with the ability to be removed. When removed, the bins nest into each other for economical shipping and storage.

"We strive to recover all our products at the end of their life so they can be recycled and turned into new products,” the company says.
