SPP Invests $150M to Expand Grid and Add 190 New Jobs

Posted

Southwest Power Pool (SPP) is expanding both its workforce and its geographic footprint as it builds out a new wholesale energy market aimed at the western U.S. The $150 million initiative will create around 190 jobs by the end of 2027, with roughly 165 of those positions based at its Little Rock, Arkansas headquarters.

The move supports the launch of Markets+, a real-time energy market tailored for utilities in the Pacific Northwest, Mountain West, and Desert Southwest. As part of this effort, SPP is scaling up its engineering, IT, market operations, and administrative capacity to meet the demands of a more complex and interconnected grid.

With financing secured, SPP’s investment reflects its expectation that demand for coordinated power market solutions will continue to grow—driven by increasing electrification, renewable integration, and ongoing reliability challenges across the power sector.

Markets+ Positions SPP for a Western Reach

Markets+ is designed to improve efficiency and reliability by enhancing coordination between utilities across a broad geographic area. As variability and congestion in the grid rise, SPP’s goal is to deliver greater stability through shared systems and real-time data capabilities.

SPP, already operating across a central U.S. territory from North Dakota to Texas, is applying its operational model to help western utilities manage evolving grid demands. The new roles in Little Rock will support everything from platform development to market operations—ensuring the necessary infrastructure is in place to run this next-gen energy market.

This westward expansion also reflects a deeper trend: as regions across the U.S. seek scalable energy solutions, organizations with experience managing large, diverse grid systems are becoming key partners in the transition. SPP is positioning itself to be one of them.
