In a bold move toward a safer future, the Minnesota Soybean Research & Promotion Council (MSR&PC) has teamed up with Cross Plains Solutions to introduce SoyFoam—the first and only GreenScreen Certified Gold firefighting foam with no intentionally added PFAS. This innovation is changing the game for fire departments while creating new demand for soy-based products.
SoyFoam isn't just another alternative—it’s a revolution in fire safety. Here's why it stands out:
Governments and industries are moving swiftly to phase out PFAS-based firefighting foams. The U.S. Department of Defense has allocated billions to eliminate PFAS foams from military bases, and states across the country are implementing bans on these toxic chemicals. With the writing on the wall for PFAS-containing foams, solutions like SoyFoam are positioned to lead the transition to safer fire suppression technology.
To ensure widespread adoption, MSR&PC launched the “Planting to Protect: From Farm to Flame” campaign, working to distribute five pails of SoyFoam to fire departments across Minnesota, prioritizing rural communities.
To boost awareness, Minnesota Soybean partnered with the University of Minnesota men’s basketball program for an innovative "Extinguish the Run" campaign. Each time the Gophers shut down an opponent’s scoring streak, a fire department in Minnesota receives a donation of SoyFoam. This creative initiative not only promotes fire safety but also highlights the need for PFAS-free firefighting solutions.
“This is a win-win,” said Mike Youngerberg, Minnesota Soybean’s Senior Director of Product Development and Commercialization. “With the timely and smart investment of soybean checkoff dollars into commercial partners who bring a safer, soy-based product to the market, we are supporting farmers, firefighters, and public health.”
While SoyFoam offers a revolutionary alternative, there are challenges to navigate. While substantial, its 10-year shelf life is shorter than the 25-year lifespan of some PFAS-containing foams. However, with increasing regulations and public awareness about PFAS dangers, municipalities, and fire departments are more inclined to prioritize safety and sustainability over longevity.
The success of SoyFoam could mark the beginning of a larger shift toward bio-based firefighting solutions, paving the way for a cleaner, healthier, and more responsible approach to fire suppression worldwide.
