Sonoco's Lego Pouch Wins Green Award

Posted
lego2An innovative stand-up pouch designed by Sonoco for use as packaging for Lego has won a gold Flexible Packaging Achievement Award in the sustainability and environmental achievement category from the Flexible Packaging Association.

The pouch, designed for Lego's Hero Factory range, weighs 80 percent less than both boxes and canisters, reducing costs and carbon emissions for shipping.

Sonoco used the Packaging Impact Quick Evaluation Tool, a life-cycle assessment tool, to determine that the pouch, made from PET and LLDPE, reduces carbon footprint significantly versus a plastic canister or a cardboard box, the company says.

Sustainability aside, the package features a press-to-close feature that makes it easy for even small hands to access and put away the Lego bricks. The pouch also uses the vivid graphics you would expect in toy packaging.

In 2012, it emerged that Sonoco was helping coffee company Melitta USA move from traditional metal cans to high-performance composite cans made from recycled and recyclable content.

Melitta, which has been roasting coffee at its location in Cherry Hill, N.J., for over 40 years, converted its 603- and 401-volume coffee cans to Sonoco’s lighter weight paperboard composite container.
