The Charlotte Observer says that the owner of Merino Mill in Mooresville, NC, has installed 5,100 solar panels in the building, which was abandoned by Burlington Industries in the late 1990s.
The project, which cost $2.7 million, is the second largest in North Carolina and, according to owner Michael Bay, eventually will be the largest. The project will generate almost 1.6 MW of electricity annually. That, according to the story, is more than double the amount of electricity needed to heat and cool the facility. The electricity is sold to Duke Energy. Merino and its tenants – which include a home furnishing business, an antiques/design gallery and a pizzeria – buy energy from the utility.
Crain’s Detroit Business reports that Ikea has increased the solar capacity of its Canton (MI) Township store with a 40,000-square-foot expansion. The project adds 781 solar panels to the facility.
