A 3 MW solar photovoltaic installation was completed on the top deck of a parking facility at the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport, according to SolarServer. The same project included addition of LED lighting and electric vehicle charging stations.
The infrastructure – which is on top of two Terminal 1-Lindbergh parking structures, according to the story – also involves the change out 7,700 metal halide light fixtures in favor of LED technology. Four charging stations also were added, bringing the total to 18. The solar installation will provide about 20 percent of the airport’s peak power demand.
Ameresco developed the solar and LED parts of the project and will maintain and operate them.
Airports, obviously, use a lot of light. In September, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport received a $45,901 rebate from Georgia Power for LED upgrades to thousands of taxiway fixtures.
