Denmark is known for using large combined heat and power (CHP) installations for its grid, but now the market is really expanding in the country for using smaller CHP systems for multifamily buildings, schools, offices and municipal buildings, according to an article in Cogeneration & On-site Power Production.
Because of the financial benefits, the smaller CHP units are configured so that all the electricity is used on site and not exported to the grid.
A typical layout for a smaller CHP system often consists of a number of cogeneration units, heat storage units and sometimes an electrical heat pump, as well as a boiler for peak heat supply, says the article.
The mini-cogen installations in Denmark so far have shown many annual operation hours and returns on investment in the two-year range, according to Cogeneration & On-site Power Production.
