Carbon offsetting firm CO2 Neutral Seal has launched its CO2NS Website product that aims to make web sites carbon neutral by buying carbon credits matched to their visitor statistics.
CO2NS Website uses statistics gathered by the Google Analytics API service to conduct a daily detailed analysis of a company's web site and its usage. The results are then matched with corresponding environmental impact data and the web site's CO2 footprint is calculated by taking into account both the server usage and visitors statistics.
Finally, based on the daily statistics, the CO2 footprint is neutralized with carbon credits, which are reserved from the registration date of the company's web site, and the web site is issued with a certificate of its carbon neutrality (pictured).
Users are only required to set up a Google Analytics account to link to the application via CO2NS.com and are given an online summary of their website's status together with a detailed report from the CO2 Neutral Seal system.
CO2NS says that, along with helping the planet, the service results in an improved company image. The service starts at $99 a year.
In April, companies such as Apple, Google and Facebook were criticized by a Greenpeace report for the reliance on emission-heavy data centers.
The report, How Dirty is Your Data?, ranked Apple as the most polluting of the cloud data companies.
