A contract with Ameresco Inc. will cut energy use by 8 percent in 11 schools in Haverhill, MA. The $2.5 million Energy Saves Performance Contract will result in annual savings of more than $270,000, according to the Eagle-Tribune.
The net savings during the term of the contract will be about $1.5 million. The upgrades will be done after the school day ends over a period of a year. The plan includes replacing fluorescent fixtures with LEDs, which will cut lighting costs by half. Other highlights including technology to control building temperatures from laptops, replacement of leaky steam traps, sealing of the outside of buildings, the ability to shut vending machines after hours, PC management software that will curtail their use of energy and the covering of the high school pool.
More than halfway across the country, the Pueblo (CO) city schools is undergoing $10.1 million in upgrades, according to The Chieftain. The work to 10 buildings includes replacing and upgrading HVAC systems, increasing water efficiency, installation of LED lighting and control system and the deployment of solar panels at two schools.
