Among other environmental initiatives, Sam's Club is testing solar at five locations. The wholesale club store also is looking into radiant flooring and energy efficient refrigeration measures.
Another three solar test sites are planned by the end of the year, said Tim Yatsko, Senior Vice President, Replenishment and Planning for Wal-Mart, reports Supermarket News.
Additionally, Sam's Club is doing three tests of carbon dioxide refrigeration systems that should help prevent the release of ozone into the atmosphere, Yatsko said.
At a prototype store in Sacramento, Calif., Sam's Club is testing a range of efficiency measures, including a radiant flooring system that uses water cooled on the roof by means of an evaporative cooling tower.
In late 2005, the company announced its goal to be ultimately supplied by 100 percent renewable energy.
By October of 2008, the chain had completed a 546 kilowatt solar power system at its Glendora, Calif., store, and had several more in the works.
