U.K. supermarket Sainsbury's has replaced the vacuum-formed plastic tray in its own-brand sliced cheese packaging with an FSC-certified corrugated pack, according to Packaging Europe.
Designer Smurfit Kappa said it had a brief to reinvigorate a product range that suffered from poor presentation. Its Shelf Ready Pack is designed to improve product display on the shelf. The pack uses exposed flutes on the inside of the pack to firmly grip the primary packaging, which ensures that the item's display face is always turned towards the customer.
Smurfit Kappa moved to 100 percent FSC and PEFC certification for its products in 2010. The company also says it was the first UK manufacturer to achieve Chain of Custody and Carbon Trust Standard certification across the entire packaging cycle.
In other sustainable packaging news, Beumer has introduced a stretch hood pallet packaging system that the company says uses less film and consumer less energy, according to a report by Food Ingredients First.
The company says the system is particularly appropriate for industries such as chemicals, construction materials, food and beverage, which all need to ensure safe and stable transportation of goods.
The machine’s control technology allows various stack heights to be recognised automatically. Beumer also reduced the machine’s footprint by 30 percent.
