GAF’s Tuscaloosa, Alabama facility is its second asphalt shingle plant in North America to achieve Waste Diversion from Landfill certification by GreenCircle Certified, the roofing manufacturer says.
To achieve a waste diversion rate of 94 percent at its Tuscaloosa facility, GAF says it pioneered several initiatives to increase operational efficiency and reduce waste. Partnering with recyclers and other organizations, GAF says it developed unique ways to reuse waste material internally and also identified alternative uses for previously landfilled waste.
Construction and demolition recycling is a $7.4 billion industry, Recycling Today reports. More than 480 million tons of C&D waste is generated in the US annually, making it the largest individual solid waste stream in the country.
