  1. Measure. Make energy data management a priority, be disciplined in measurement and only track mission-critical data that drives effective reporting and action.
  2. Identify unique sites and data streams. Create a centralized inventory of energy data streams by cataloging each site and each energy source by site to better visualize the origin of energy data.
  3. Determine significant energy users.
  4. Monitor the performance of significant energy users. Use software that provides an enterprise view and a site view. Detailing energy consumption by location, time of use, process and personnel will allow you to build a plan to better manage consumption that ultimately results in reduced costs.
  5. Develop a process for regular data collection. Maintain and periodically calibrate physical meters and other data collection devices to ensure their accuracy.
  6. Review all invoices for accuracy.
  7. Resolve billing errors. Audit utility invoices monthly.
  8. Standardize utility invoice data.
  9. Eliminate late fees.
  10. Benchmark data.
  11. Index data. Comparing the energy consumption of your sites allows you to easily determine the highest and lowest performing facilities so you can develop a plan to improve the low performers.
  12. Digitize your data. Rather than adopting a spreadsheet approach, using a web-based data platform can maximize the power of a centralized, dynamic data repository for greater analysis and stronger correlation of disparate data streams.
  13. Build reports.
  14. Share your data internally. An energy report is great way to illustrate how resources are being converted and display a cost/benefit analysis.
  15. Develop an energy education program. Use data and reports to educate employees about the impact on energy so that they can help champion the company’s reduction goals.
