Research being fundedMotor Energy Manage by a $6.7 million grant by the U.S. Department of Energy and being carried out by Clemson University, the TECO-Westinghouse Motor Company and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute aims to develop technology to reduce energy consumption in industrial motors.

The story says that the motors account for 68 percent of the energy used by industrial manufacturing in the United States. They are used in fans, pumps, compressors, grinding mills and myriad other processes and procedures.

According to the story, researchers will look at a variety of techniques and processes, including:

  • Wide bandgap techniques
  • Advanced magnetic materials
  • Improved insulation materials
  • Aggressive cooling techniques
  • High-speed bearing designs
  • Improved conductors or superconducting materials

Last week, QM Power introduced the Q-Sync Smart Synchronous Motor, which, according to the company, reduces energy consumption in motors by as much as 80 percent. It is being offered for no upfront costs. Buyers will pay QM Power with a percentage of the energy savings from the motor.
